Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), room temperature
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chunks
  • Fine sea salt or finishing salt for topping

Instructions

    Brown the Butter:

Place 1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter in a medium skillet. Melt over medium heat, swirling the pan frequently. Once it starts to foam and develop a nutty aroma, and turns a light golden/amber color, remove from heat and pour into a small bowl. Let it cool to room temperature.

    Make the Cookie Dough:

In a mixing bowl, combine the remaining stick of butter with the brown sugar. Mix for 3 minutes until fluffy and smooth.
Add the granulated sugar, cooled browned butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
Beat in the eggs and egg yolk.
Gradually add the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda, mixing on low speed until just incorporated.
Stir in the chocolate chips and chunks.

    Chill the Dough:

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

    Form and Bake the Cookies:

Scoop 2-tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
Bake for 11 to 14 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden.
Remove from the oven and cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Sprinkle the tops with sea salt or flake salt, if desired.

Enjoy these delectable cookies with a glass of cold milk, or share them with friends and family. They're sure to be a hit!
